Astronomical Observatory Celebrates 139th Anniversary

On Tuesday, April 7, the 139th anniversary of the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade was ceremonially marked. On that date in 1887, the Astronomical and Meteorological Observatory was founded, and it has since been traditionally observed as Observatory Day.

The Director of the Observatory, Dr. Luka Č. Popović, presented the institution’s annual report for 2025, providing an overview of implemented projects, staffing changes, collaborations, and other significant activities carried out over the past year. On this occasion, the traditional awards for 2026 were also conferred. The award for scientific achievement was presented to Dr. Miroslava Vukčević, the award for early-career scientific work to Dr. Miljana Jovanović, while the recognition for contributions to the development of the Observatory in the category of external legal and natural persons was granted to the Museum of the Rudnik–Takovo Region in Gornji Milanovac. The award for contributions to the development of the Observatory among its employees was not conferred this year.

The ceremony was further complemented by a musical program performed by pianist Biljana Todorović and vocalist Bojana Trajković.

The event was attended by representatives of ministries, faculties, institutes, science and technology parks, as well as other institutions from the scientific, economic, and academic sectors.
